3 Tips for Networking

Mental Track, Social Track

Networking becomes a more crucial tool during times of economic certainty. Here are 3 do’s and don’ts of networking courtesy of bnet.com.

The first tip is to build rapport. This sounds easy enough right. Unfortunately many of us leave out this step or underestimate it’s importance. When meeting someone and building a connection, ask questions to really get a feel for who the person is and what they do. Another suggestion is to give that person some kind of value. This will real drive home on impression.

Tip #2 is reciprocation. All of your network interactions can’t be about what the other person can do for you. You should look for ways that you can help someone else before ever looking for something from them. Collecting good deeds is not only rewarding in that it makes us feel good when we can help others but it’s a great way to build trust with people that you are someone worth building a business relationship with.

The last tip is to not assume that everyone you talk with wants to help and can help. There are some people who aren’t interested in helping others in business. Others want to help and may even try to help but may not have the resources to be able to do it. It’s important to keep this in mind while you are networking so that you can manage expectations accordingly.

Use these tips the next time you are networking to make sure you are getting the most out of your time. Any other tips out there and what to do or not do?
